Ancient Ideas for Modern HappinessOctober 18, 2017 - November 08, 2017

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is a psychotherapy directed toward solving current problems and teaching skills to modify dysfunctional thinking and behavior. At its core is the idea that the perception of a situation is more closely connected to our reaction than the situation itself. Interestingly, this is NOT a new idea. The psychologist who founded Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Albert Ellils, was surprisingly influenced by Epictetus, a 2,000 year old philosopher and one of the three most important Stoic philosophers. The Stoic’s believed that once we are able to consistently recognize the difference between what is in our control and what isn’t, we can achieve tranquility. It’s not the things in the world which upset us, they taught, but our reaction to those things. THAT we can control.

This workshop is not psychology; rather, we’ll explore the works of Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, and Seneca with an eye toward making sense of the Stoic ideal in our modern, smart phone, “Alexa order a pizza” kind of world.
