Entrepreneurship / Small Business Certificate

Jefferson Community College (JCC) and the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) have collaborated to offer workshops each semester that span topics relevant to any emerging business. Participants in this Entrepreneurship & Small Business Workshop Series will learn or brush up on practical business topics that prepare them for small business and entrepreneurial success.  Individuals are able to customize selections and enroll in workshops that specifically fit their needs.  Participants who take as few as five courses may apply for the Entrepreneurship & Small Business Certificate from JCC & the SBDC which qualifies an individual for funding and exposure opportunities for their business.  E/SB workshops are identified by an asterisk and listed among the professional growth & technology series.

Allied Health Pre-Certification Courses

Clinical Medical Assistant ProgramSeptember 10, 2018 - February 11, 2019

This program is intended for students who want to prepare for an exciting, challenging and rewarding career in healthcare. This program will train students to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office. Instruction includes among other things preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and the cardiac life cycle. Students will review important topics including phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology including proper lead placements, a professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare. This program includes 140 hours of classroom lecture, hands on labs and a 160 hour clinical externship.

National Certification: Upon successful completion of this program, students would be eligible to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) national examination.

Medical Billing and Coding ProgramSeptember 10, 2018 - December 17, 2018

This combined 98 hour medical billing and coding course offers the skills needed to accurately code provider encounters by translating medical documentation into medical codes to be used in billing for services/procedures. This course will also discuss billing practices such as the electronic medical health record and how to manually submit an insurance claim. Student will learn the skills needed to correctly abstract information from a patient record, apply coding guidelines and follow reimbursement procedures to optimize physician payment while codes using ICD10CM, CPT and HCPCS manual. Students will gain an understanding of HIPPA, confidentiality, and how to successfully manage the medical business office. Differentiate Medicare, Medicaid, third party, managed care, and private insurance. Learn the roles and responsibilities of the coder, physician, and patient in regard to the legal and ethical aspects of medical coding. The first 6 classes will be devoted to Medical Terminology and Anatomy. The course will assist with and provide information on the national certification for medical coding: After completing the course, the student may want to obtain a certification in medical coding for an additional cost through one of the entities that offers the certification. It is suggested students obtain 6-month experience and purchase additional materials and practice exams to assist with the certification exam. Certification information on AAPC, American Academy of Professional Code and AHIMA, American Health Information Management Associate will be provided during the course.

Pharmacy TechnicianOctober 15, 2018 - December 05, 2018

Technicians work in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies and other health care settings - working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement. The Pharmacy Technician Certification Program includes a graded final exam to help prepare students for the PTCB exam.

This comprehensive 50 hour course will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam.

Phlebotomy TechnicianSeptember 11, 2018 - December 13, 2018

The 90 hour Phlebotomy Technician Program prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis. Students will become familiar with all aspects related to blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures completely and safely. Classroom work includes terminology, anatomy and physiology; blood collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and clinical training in skills and techniques to perform puncture methods. The program also includes lab exercises, live blood draws, work with a training arm and other exercises intended to prepare students to function as an entry level Phlebotomy Technician.

General Pre-Certification Courses

H.I.T (Health Information Technology) Certificate Program

Health Information Technology is designed for students with a background in healthcare or traditional I.T.  Students will receive 100 hours of classroom or online training, and hands on training in electronic health records. All students will be eligible to take the national certification exam.
