Frequently Asked Questions

What is Continuing Education?

The Continuing Education Division is the community’s resource for innovative learning, individual and career development and dynamic partnerships. Within the Continuing Education Division are the following departments: EDGE or college in the high schools; Distance Learning (ITV and online); Military and Veteran programming and academic support; Bachelor’s & Advanced Degrees; Noncredit training and workshops offered through Jefferson Express, online, and on campus.

What is a noncredit workshop or training?

A noncredit workshop or training is not a college degree. The majority of noncredit workshops through Continuing Education are offered on campus, while others are offered online or through Jefferson Express. Noncredit workshops and trainings focus on areas of professional growth & technology, Personal enrichment, Kids camps, Precertification trainings, Online learning and High School Equivalency Exam Prep.

What is a precertification training?

A precertification training is a long form workshop. A training of this type is most likely 40+ hours of instruction in a specific area, but not a college program or college degree. The goal is to prepare you to take a nationally recognized exam and in most cases, receive a nationally recognized certificate in a specific industry. These career track programs are an efficient way for an adult learner to make a career change or enhance current career opportunities. Precertification trainings are offered on campus or online through one of our online training partners.

How is a noncredit workshop different from Jefferson Express?

Jefferson Express is any workshop or training held off campus. Continuing Education uses its own resources to schedule workshops at collaborative community partners. The majority of Jefferson Express workshops focus on learning a new technology (like how to use an iPad or Excel) or Art (pencil drawing).

What types of online trainings do you offer?

Continuing Education has partnered with UGotClass, TheCourse, and other online learning organizations, to bring online workshops and trainings to the North Country. These types of experiences are 100% online and many of the trainings are preparing the participant to take a national certification or to earn CEUs. Examples include: Project Management, Personal Trainer, and areas specific to high school or elementary school teaching.

Do you offer kids’ programming?

Continuing Education offers a variety of kid’s workshops on campus. The majority are held on campus during the summer months. Parents have a choice in registering their child in a week long workshop on one topic, or choosing our newly enhanced workshop experience that begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. Monday – Thursday.

How do I register?

You may register for a noncredit workshop or training by calling Continuing Education at 315-786-2233. Registration with payment is required to secure a seat in the workshop or training.

Why do you ask for my social security number?

Your social security number creates a SUNY student record. Social security numbers are protected the same as a credit bearing students number is protected.

What is your cancellation policy?

24-hour notice is required to receive a 100% refund.  Notice must be given during business hours Monday – Friday. There is no refund after the first day of the workshop. The 24-hour refund notice does not apply to online trainings. There is no refund for online trainings or precertification trainings. Enrollment is important to what we do! If enrollment is low, the workshop or training may be cancelled and you will receive a full refund. During inclement weather, call our weather related emergencies number at 315-786-6565.  If campus is “closed” because of inclement weather, the workshop is cancelled. If there is a delay, workshops or trainings move forward as originally scheduled.

Does financial aid cover the costs of Continuing Education workshops, trainings or precertification’s?

Traditional financial aid does not cover the costs of Continuing Education workshops, trainings, or precertification’s. The cost is out of pocket for most people.
